postheadericon A Guide to French Bedroom Furniture

Home, as the saying goes, is where the heart is. Home is also where many people invest months – or even years – turning it from a mere ‘bricks and mortar’ house, into a comfortable, personalised dwelling.

As such, home is a place of refuge for many people, a sanctuary from the big wide world outside, somewhere to relax, unwind and spend quality time with their loved ones. It’s for this reason that so many people take a great deal of care in selecting the right furniture, decor, appliances and general layout – a home is a reflection of someone’s taste and personal preferences and for many, it all begins in the bedroom.

The bedroom offers even more personalised space within the wider home, so in a shared abode, people can disappear to their own room for some time to themselves. This is why many people take a great deal of care making their bedroom the star attraction of their home. So where to start?

Well, for that extra special touch of class, you could do a lot worse than bring a little French elegance into the bedroom. Taking centre stage, the iconic French dressing table can take any home to the next level in terms of chic, with a hand-carved antique dressing table with mirror and French stool bringing both function and class to any bedroom.

Naturally, any bedroom needs a bed. To complement the exquisite French dressing table, what better way to lay your head down to rest than with a black antique French bed, with delicate wood carvings and an antique finish?

For the classiest of French bedrooms, you could go all out with a French bedside table, chest of drawers, wardrobe, cheval mirror and console table. The icing on the cake might just be a blanket box, screen and a French mannequin. Now, a mannequin may seem like a step too far for those with more of a leaning towards functionality, but anyone seeking a classic French feel – like something straight from the set of Luis Buñuel’s classic ‘Belle de jour’ – might just want to go that extra step to complete the look.

postheadericon How to Build a Wood Bed Frame?

Have you ever thought about how you can build a wood bed frame with your own hands rather than going to the furniture shop and purchasing one? This is a great idea because you have a freedom of choice and know just exactly what you need for your bedroom.

What All Do You Need?

  • 2, 8ft x 8ft hardwood boards foot and head
  • 4, 3ft high density hardwood pegs
  • 15, 76″ medium density hardwood pegs
  • Hammer
  • Nail
  • Chisel
  • Hardening solution, Varnish
  • Saw
  • Screw
  • Sand paper
  • Drill

Step 1 – Choice of Bed Size

It is most important that you understand what size of mattress you have or if you want to get a new size, may be upgrade from a queen to a king, make sure your room will be able to hold it.

Step 2 – Choice of Wood

You need to take this seriously because this is what is going to hold the weight on the bed completely. When you choose your wood pieces you need to choose those that are straight and not curved as this can get your sleeping uncomfortable. It is necessary that you get wood that is an inch thick.

Step 3 – Creating the Headboard

You will be making a 68″headboard. Once you have the wood ready you can design it in any shape that you would like maybe a fancy one, or you can just make a plain rectangular headboard. Once the headboard is all ready you need to nail its left and right to a high-density peg.

Step 4 – The Side railings

You will now need to saw a couple of wood planks that are of the size 80″ x 18″ and you need to place them horizontally near the headboard. Once these are ready you need to use the sand paper to just smooth it out and then attach them to the high-density pegs of the headboard.

Step 5 – The End board

This is where you need to be extremely careful because this needs to be in complete correspondence with the headboard that is created, failing which your bed frame will look lopsided.

Step 6 – The Surface of the Bed

This is where you use the 15 medium density hardwood pegs. You need to be extremely cautious because this is where the weight of all the people sleeping on the bed is going to fall and your precision needs to be perfect. Spread these 15 pegs within the side railings. At the end of each of these pegs, you need to drill holes into the side railing. Use the screws and connect the pegs with the railings together. To ensure maximum safety and durability you can hammer in a few nails as well.

Step 7 – Final Touches

Look at any irregularities on the wood that you have used and smooth them out using the sand paper. You now need to apply the hardwood solution and the varnish to ensure that the bed withholds any change in temperature.

You now have your complete wooden bed frame ready. You can be proud of your achievement because it is your creativity that has been put into use here and soon you will be able to use designs into it and create wonderful frames for your house.
